Many women in their late 40s and 50s tell me the same thing: "My weight hasn't really changed, but my body has." The jeans fit differently. The waistline is softer. The scale says one thing, the mirror says another.
They're right to notice. And it matters far more than how clothes fit.
What actually changes in midlife
During the menopause transition, falling estrogen changes where the body stores fat. Fat that once settled around the hips and thighs begins to move toward the abdomen, and much of it collects deep inside, around the organs. This is visceral fat.
At the same time, women gradually lose lean muscle. The result: a woman can weigh the same at 52 as she did at 45 and still have a very different metabolic profile. Less muscle, more visceral fat, same number on the scale.
Why visceral fat is different
Visceral fat isn't simply stored energy. It is metabolically active tissue. It releases inflammatory signals and fatty acids that travel straight to the liver, and it is closely linked to:
• Insulin resistance and rising blood sugar
• Higher LDL cholesterol and triglycerides
• Higher blood pressure
• Chronic, low-grade inflammation
This is a big part of why cardiovascular risk climbs so noticeably after menopause, rather than slowly over time. Heart disease remains a leading cause of death for women, and midlife is when the groundwork is often laid.
Why the bathroom scale misses it
Body weight and BMI can't tell you what your weight is made of. Two women with the same BMI can have completely different amounts of muscle and visceral fat, and completely different risk.
That's why we don't start with the scale. We start with body composition.
InBody body composition analysis at TS Skin Clinic. We use InBody analysis to give you a clear picture of what's going on beneath the surface. It's quick,
painless and non-invasive: you stand barefoot on the platform and hold the hand electrodes for about a minute. A very low, imperceptible electrical signal measures how different tissues conduct it, which lets the device estimate your body composition.
Your results include:
• Skeletal muscle mass and how it's distributed across your arms, legs and trunk
• Body fat mass and body fat percentage
• Visceral fat level
• Body water balance
• Basal metabolic rate, a useful guide for nutrition planning
We then walk through your printout with you, in plain language, and connect it to your goals.
What we do with your results
Numbers only matter if they lead somewhere. With my background in integrative nutrition and hormonal health, we use your InBody results to shape a realistic plan around:
• Protecting and building muscle through strength training and adequate protein
• Nutrition that supports blood sugar balance and reduces inflammation
• Sleep and stress, both of which influence where the body stores fat
• Body contouring support where appropriate, such as Lipolift, as part of a bigger picture rather than a quick fix
Then we re-measure. Repeating your scan every 6 to 12 weeks shows whether you're gaining muscle and reducing visceral fat, even when the scale barely moves. For many women, that's the most motivating part.
Getting accurate results
For the most reliable reading:
• Come in the morning if possible, before eating
• Avoid exercise, sauna or showering right before your scan
• Use the washroom beforehand
• Keep hydration normal the day before, and skip alcohol
• Try to test at a similar time of day each visit
InBody analysis isn't suitable for anyone with a pacemaker or other implanted electronic device, or during pregnancy. Please let us know if either applies to you.
A signal, not a sentence.
Midlife changes in your waistline aren't a personal failing, and they aren't simply cosmetic. They're an early signal, and one you can act on. The earlier you know your numbers, the more room you have to change them.
If you're curious what your own body composition looks like, reach out to us at TS Skin Clinic & Wellness in Oakville to schedule your InBody analysis, or ask about it at your next visit.
InBody analysis is a wellness and body composition tool, not a medical diagnosis. For cardiovascular screening, including blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar testing, please speak with your family doctor.
